Lorde – in the March / April Issue

Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor was born on November 7th, 1996 – she’s just 17 years old! The New Zealand native of Irish and Croatian descent was artistic even as a child and spent a lot of her time enjoying drama and vocal classes.   At the young age of 13 she was signed to Universal and picked the stage name Lorde because she was fascinated with royalty and aristocracy throughout history. She added the “e” to the word “Lord” to make it seem more feminine.   While Lorde was still in middle school, she appeared in a school play. Her co-star’s father felt she was talented and sent recordings of her singing to various industry talent scouts. Though she was only 13, Lorde began working with songwriters and producers trying to hone in on her own style and sound.   It was only when Lorde hooked up with songwriter and producer Joel Little that her creative engine went into overdrive and the songs that were to make up the album Pure Heroine, including Royals, flowed like water.   The Meteoric Rise to Fame: Lorde produced an EP entitled The Love Club for release in November 2012 and it was made available as a free download. Tens of thousands of people downloaded it, including some influential American music producers who shared it amongst themselves and other influencers   Sean Parker heard the song Royals and put it on the influential Spotify playlist, “Hipster International”. It was an instant hit.   http://playlists.net/hipster-international-1   Royals debuted at Number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 and stayed there for 3 weeks. Soon it was topping the US Billboard charts as well, and at 17 years of age, Lorde was one of the youngest people to ever hold that honour.   The drive to get an album out was on! Pure Heroine was released in the U.S. in September 2013. Around the same time, Lorde declined an offer for Katy Perry to tour with her as the opening act.   At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, Lorde won both Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for the debut single, Royals. She is the youngest person ever to be nominated for Record of the Year.   Lorde’s boyfriend is 24-year-old New Zealander James Lowe, an accomplished photographer whom she knew before her rise to fame. A lot of haters online have made issue of his appearance and race.   It’s refreshing to see how open Lorde is about her appearance, her age and her stage presence. A few years back when Katy Perry was still married to Russell Brand, Brand took a picture of Katy in bed without make-up and it was deleted almost immediately (one would assume as soon as Perry woke up).   This recent Instagram picture shows Lorde in a bedtime selfie without make-up and wearing acne cream on her face: http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-beauty/news/lorde-goes-without-makeup-wears-acne-cream-in-instagram-selfie-2014122   It’s unlikely we will ever see Lorde in a sexually charged twerking video a la Miley Cyrus, or showing loads of cleavage, thank you Katy Perry. Her look would be best described as Goth or witch.   Unlike many female performers, Lorde is comfortable appearing on stage without backup singers and dancers, under simple lighting dressed in her signature black outfits. She admitted in a recent Rolling Stone article that she “gets paralyzingly nervous a lot of times”.   What will Lorde do next? Having achieved so much at such a young age must bring great pressure with it. If anyone can handle the fame and all the trappings of success, it’s Lorde.   I think my whole career can be boiled down to the one word I always say in meetings: strength.
