Incredible Powers, Extraordinary People:
–Strange Chemistry/Random House’s much-anticipated new YA fantasy

“A fierce and intelligent heroine, a sibling with a challenging destiny to discover, a heart-warming romance, and an X-men type school for special powers in the Emerald Isle, all add up to a superbly gripping tale…A fantastic read!”
– Suzanne McLeod, author of the Spellcrackers.com urban fantasy series

The history of ‘The Holders’ starts thousands of years ago, with a race of people living in Ireland called Cumhacht Coinnigh or Power Holders. They were like regular humans except they each had what they called a beannú an bandia, a ‘blessing of the Goddess.’ This ‘blessing’ was actually a special power or ability. Some Holders could read and control the thoughts of others, some could heal the injured or sick, some could conjure false images, while others could change their appearance right before your eyes. They were people who could cast charms and spells, some who could read and measure the powers of others, and a few who could actually walk in the future. There were all sorts of powers that people had back in those days, some that aren’t even known anymore as their lines have died out completely over the last few centuries.

And so provides the vivid backdrop to breakout writer, Julianna Scott’s new YA fantasy, The Holders, the first of a series.

The Holders, set in present day, introduces you to seventeen-year-old Becca, who has spent her whole life protecting her brother Ryland from, well, everything. The abandonment of their father, the so called ‘experts’ who insist that voices in his head are unnatural and must be dealt with, and the constant threat of being taken away to some hospital and studied like an animal.

When two representatives from a school in Ireland for kids ‘like’ Ryland, appear claiming to have the answers to Ryland’s perceived problem, Becca doesn’t buy it for one second. That is until they seem to know things about Ryland and about Becca and Ryland’s family, that force Becca to concede that there may be more to these people than meets the eye.

Though still highly skeptical, Becca agrees to do what’s best for Ryland. What they find at this special school, St. Brigid’s, is a world beyond their imagination. Little by little they piece together the information of their family’s heritage, their estranged father, and the legend of the Holder race that decrees Ryland is the one they’ve been waiting for. However, they are all -especially Becca- in for a surprise that will change what they thought they knew about themselves.

Becca meets Alex, a Holder who is fiercely loyal to their race, and for some reason, herself and Ryland. There’s an attraction between Becca and Alex that can’t be denied, but destiny gets in the way and nothing is as it seems.

Becca feels lost, but found at the same time. Can she bring herself to leave Ryland now that he’s settled and can clearly see his future? Will she be able to put the feelings she has for Alex aside and head back to the U.S.? And can Becca and Ryland ever forgive their father for what he’s done?

“The Holders showcases an utterly engaging new voice in YA fiction,” says Strange Chemistry editor Amanda Rutter, “with supernatural powers and a gripping love story set against the stunning backdrop of Ireland. I was enthralled and know you will be too.”

“I’ve spent my entire life thinking up stories and imagining new worlds to spend my mental time,” says Julianna. “They always say you should write the story you want to read. So that’s exactly what I did.”

Julianna Scott spent the majority of her educational career convinced she would be a musician. However, after receiving her music degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, she realized that she’d been born in the wrong era for her dreams of singing jazz to adoring fans clad in zoot-suits and flapper dresses to come true, and began to wonder if her true calling might be elsewhere.

While Julianna had always excelled in writing throughout school, she’d never considered it a career possibility until about three years ago, when she’d gotten her first story idea and decided to go for it. She grabbed her laptop, started typing away, and has never looked back.
