Saudi leader and monarch King Abdullah has stated that women will soon get the right to vote – in 2015.

If, however, they need to get to the polls, they still are unable to drive there. There remains a country-wide ban on driving. Recently, many women have been defying the ban, but they face severe punishment for their actions.

Today, a woman identified only as Shema was sentenced to 10 lashes for defying the ban – found guilty of driving in Jeddah in July. The sentence will be appealed.

Women2drive campaigns for Saudi women to be legally allowed to drive in the kingdom.
