girlworks was very interested to learn about a local project that helps make a student’s grad dreams come true! As graduation time nears, there are many students who begin to worry about whether they will be able to attend the prom.  For many families, there is simply no money in their budget for a new dress, shoes, or a suit and tie.  Many students miss out on this once in a lifetime experience because the cost is just out of reach. So every year, there are many groups of volunteers, such as the Cinderella and Prince Charming Project, that help students in-need (Grade 8 & 12 females and males) make it to their grad in style. girlworks did some further research and we found that there are numerous similar projects across Canada and the United States! These projects are run in various communities by volunteers who organize the donation of new or gently used grad dresses, suits and accessories. The volunteers also assist students with the selection of a dress or suit and help send the teens to grad looking great! So if you know someone who might need some assistance as graduation approaches or if you would like to volunteer or donate, check out our listing of various Cinderella & Prince Charming Projects or similar organizations across Canada and the U.S. Get involved and help make graduation a great event for all students!

Listed below are some DONATION ideas (please note that the following is not an exhaustive list and other items are gladly accepted):

For Female Students:

• Grad-style dresses (gently used, or new; current style; all sizes and colours) ** please note that this event is for BOTH grade 8 and 12 students so items appropriate for either age group are welcome
• Shoes (gently used or new; all sizes and colours)
• Accessories – wraps, stoles, purses, clutches, scarves and pashminas
• Jewellery – necklaces, earrings, bracelets, hairclips etc
• Hosiery – new only, all colours and sizes welcome
• Cosmetics – new, all brands and types welcome (samples, trial sizes, nail polish, etc)
• Gift Certificates for Hair Styling – an excellent way to complement the new outfit would be a complimentary “up-do” on the day of graduation!
• Dry cleaning vouchers – some dresses may need minor spot cleaning, this would be a great way to alleviate that expense
• Gift certificates for manicures – a wonderfully pampering experience for a student!

For Male Students:

• Suits, or Jacket and Pants separates (gently used or new, all sizes and colours) ** note sizes needed to accommodate both grade 8’s and 12’s
• Dress Shirts (gently used or new, all sizes and colours)
• Shoes (gently used or new)
• Ties, cummerbunds, pocket folds, cufflinks, belts.
• Dry cleaning vouchers – some suits and dress shirts may need to be professionally cleaned and/or pressed, this would be a great way to accommodate those expenses
• Cosmetics – yes, males like them too!  Consider colognes, body spray, moisturizer, skin and hair care supplies
