An interesting study was recently completed at Florida State University. A woman, who worked in a lab – apparently to work with partners putting together a Lego block puzzle, was actually there to be judged on her attractiveness.

The woman wore no make-up or perfume / scent and put her hair in a ponytail. She always wore the same thing to the lab – a t-shirt and jeans. Once each male partner had a chance to sit with her and assemble blocks, they were given several questions to answer – some which rated her attractiveness.

Previous research has shown that women at the height of fertility seem more attractive to men. In fact women want to go out more at this stage of fertility, dress up more, and tend to dress more attractively. The pitch of a woman’s voice rises and there are several other cues and behaviours in both men and women during the cycle.

The interesting thing about the study was that men who were in relationships when asked questions about the Lego block puzzle partner attractiveness – seemed to suppress their attraction, as though they were trying to convince themselves that the woman was not desirable. Because she was forbidden, they basically told themselves she was ugly!

Hmmmm….it’s hard enough to figure out what’s going on already – now we have to try to think about behaviour being exhibited in the subconscious……
