American and European educators who have published a study of 65 countries, note that Shanghai students are at the top in Math, Science and Reading. Approximately 5,100 Shanghai students took part in the standardized tests and similar numbers in other countries – Shanghai students ranked #1 in all categories. Shanghai has some 20 million residents, and draws an educated and experienced workforce from all over China. The test scores reflect the rapid modernization of China, and also the strong culture of education and study as opposed to extra-cirricular activities.

Canada fared well in the rankings – in the top 10 in all 3 categories. The United States did not rank in the top 10 in any of the categories.
