Countdown to the Prom

It may seem like it’s still far away, but the school year is quickly coming to a close. Some of you are graduating into high school and planning a prom, and some just want to plan a year-end formal party.

2 – 3 months before:

  • Start looking through some fashion magazines and website to determine what type of dress, shoes and purse you want.  You don’t want to be disappointed and not get the dress you want. You may also need some time to get alterations done.
  • Remember – you don’t need to break the bank on a dress. Chances are you are still growing so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend a lot of money – especially if you are not going to be able to wear the dress a lot in the future. There are lots of stores where you can get a beautiful dress for around $100.
  • Are you planning on going with a certain someone? Don’t leave that to chance either – just ask him. It’s easier and more honest than dropping hints and flirting.
  • Think about whether you are going to wear a corsage, or if your date will wear a boutonniere – and order the flowers well in advance.
  • Are you planning on taking a limo? It’s a lot of money not well spent… If you are – go with other friends to share the cost.

1 or 2 week before:

  • Once you have your dress, shoes and purse for the event you may want to put on the entire outfit and walk around in it as a trial – even for half an hour – to ensure you have the look you want and can wear it comfortably. Walk up the stairs, bend over, dance a little…
  • Buy your nail polish, lip gloss, nylons / stockings etc.
  • Confirm your hair appointment (if you have one). If you are planning to do your own hair – why not do a trial run?

1 or 2 days before:

  • Make sure mom and dad are in on your schedule – especially if they are driving you to appointments or to the prom.
  • Check your camera to make certain it’s in working order, has batteries and memory etc.
  • Do you have lip gloss – or any other make-up you may want, tissue, tic tacs, extra nylons or stockings in your purse? Always take a bit of extra money – your “mad money”.
  • Remind your date (if you have one), or pick up your corsage at the florist – put it in the fridge to keep it fresh.
  • If you are getting your hair done at the salon – wear a loose fitting shirt so it’s easy to get on and off over your “do”
