Did you know that a Canadian by the name of Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891? He was a dedicated and creative physical education instructor who was employed at YMCA College at Springfield, Massachusetts, at the time. The game has undergone some rule changes over the years and is now one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Basic Rules:

  • The object of the game is to score points by shooting the basketball through the baskets positioned at each end of the court;
  • There are two opposing teams on the court with five players each;
  • A Jump Ball commences play at centre court; the referee tosses the ball straight up into the air above the two players;
  • Each player jumps up to reach the ball and pass it to one of their teammates;
  • Then, each team tries to keep control of the ball by passing and dribbling down the court toward the opposing team’s basket;
  • The opposing team tries to get control of the ball by blocking shots and recovering failed shots at the basket;
  • Play continues as each team runs up and down the court trying to get the ball through the hoops;
  • If a basket is scored or the basketball goes out of bounds then the opposite team would get possession of the ball;
  • The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.

Number of Players:

Each team consists of 5 players: 1 Centre, 2 Forwards, 2 Guards or Defensemen

Player Positions:

Centre: Usually the tallest player on the team. The centre can be a big scorer, but also needs to be strong at rebounds and blocking shots.

Small forward: Along with the shooting guard, the small forward is one of the most athletic and versatile players on the team. Typically, they help with ball handling, make outside shots, and get rebounds.

Power forward: The power forward is also a tall player that is usually responsible for rebounding and some scoring. This player controls activity in the lane.

Point guard: The point guard is the team leader and play caller on the court. These players need good ball handling and passing skills, as well as strong leadership and decision-making skills.

Shooting guard: The shooting guard has the main responsibility of making long outside shots including the three-point shot. The shooting guard should have good passing skills and be able to help the point guard with the ball handling.

Player Equipment:

  • Basketball / court shoes
  • Team jersey
  • Shorts
  • Basketball
  • Basketball hoops: circular metal hoops that are 45.7 cm (18 inches) in diameter with a net hanging down. The basketball hoop is attached to the backboard and is positioned 3.05 metres (10 feet) off the ground.
